My name is Mikaela Allen. I was born in Detroit, MI. I have been playing flute for thirteen years and I am in the process of learning the bass. I have also played the saxophone for two years. The unique thing about my music is that it is very unconventional. Even though I do enjoy playing the classical sonatas and ballads from Mozart and Bach, what really moves me emotionally and musically is soul and R&B. Considering it was what I was brought up on, I always wanted to emulate it through my instruments. The strange thing is that mine just so happened to be the flute.
I have played with various musicians associated with Stax Music Academy’s Artist in Residence program such as Kirk Whalum, Ben Cauley, Cyrus Chestnut, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, among others.
My most memorable gig was at Federation Square in Melbourne, Australia.
I am a recent graduate of Berklee College of Music, majoring in Music Business with a concentration in Marketing and minoring in Africana Studies. I will be attending Berklee’s Masters program in Valencia, Spain starting this Fall.
