About Me

Jared Henderson is a versatile double bassist with a distinct and mature voice on his instrument. He currently resides in Boston and is a well-established professional within the music community. Jared’s music career is slowly blossoming as it takes him to areas across New England, New York City, France and Oregon. Jared performs weekly at Wally’s Jazz Café and regularly at venues including Ryle’s Jazz Club, The Middle East, The Lily Pad, Club Passim and Scullers. Jared is in the midst of his sixth semester at Berklee College of music where he is pursing a Bachelors of Music Degree in both Bass Performance and Classical Composition.

Jared grew up in a musical family and was raised in a small artistic community nestled in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon. In the dawn of his musical quest Jared had brief affairs with the piano, guitar, tuba, and electric bass before finally settling on the double bass at age 12. The majority of Jared’s musical education and inspiration came from his father who is both an accomplished jazz trumpet player and educator in the Pacific Northwest. He also studied with local bassist John Allen and performed frequently with working professionals and other talented students throughout Oregon. In high school Jared won numerous awards at places including the Oregon Jazz Festival, Oregon All-state competition, Reno Jazz Festival, and Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival.

The musical development of this young bassist was heavily influenced by the numerous Jazz Camps that he attended during summers, such as the University of Oregon Jazz Camp, Port Townsend Jazz Workshop, Berklee 5 week, SUNY purchase Jazz Camp and Mel Brown Jazz Camp. Jared encountered extremely talented musicians his own age there and also was blessed to work with great educators including Steve Owen, Ingrid Jensen, John Clayton, Randy Porter, Dave Frieson, Terri Lyne Carrington and Todd Coolman.

The most significant event of Jared’s high school career was when he attended the Berklee 5 week in 2008 and was awarded a full tuition scholarship to study at Berklee College of Music.

In the fall of 2009 Jared moved to Boston to study at Berklee and chase his musical dream. He currently is in his 6th semester and studies with teachers including Hal Crook, Dave Santoro, John Lockwood, Darren Barrett, and Julian Lage. Most recently Jared has been blessed to perform with David Liebman, the Mike Bono Group, Hannah Read Band and the Jason Palmer Quintet. After graduation Jared plans to move to New York City or Europe and work as a professional bassist and music educator.
