About Me

Jazz guitarist Peter Wagner was born and raised in the Washington DC area. Peter showed a close affinity for music during his childhood. He sang with the Maryland Boy Choir for two years during elementary school, performing many choral pieces, including Mahler’s Eighth Symphony, with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center. After devoting four years to studying classical piano, Peter began learning to play guitar at the age of 12. While at Gonzaga High School in Washington DC, Peter played guitar and bass guitar in the Jazz Ensemble and the Wind Ensemble. In the summer of 2007, Peter attended Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan, where he performed with Interlochen’s internationally acclaimed World Youth Symphony Orchestra. At the end of the summer, Interlochen Arts Academy awarded Peter a scholarship to attend as a full-time boarding student for his Junior and Senior years of high school. While at the Academy, Peter competed in the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival, as a member of the Interlochen jazz combo, and was a finalist in jazz guitar for the 2009 Gibson/Baldwin High School Grammy Band. Excelling in his academic and musical studies, Peter was selected to be a music theory tutor for his Senior year. In 2009, he graduated from Interlochen with first academic honors, an academic award in English, and an award for distinction in jazz studies. Peter has performed with jazz combos at venues in Boston such as Wally’s Café and the Regattabar, as well as at venues local to the Baltimore, Maryland, and Washington DC areas, notably at Twins Jazz on the celebrated U Street jazz corridor, one of DC’s most famous jazz clubs. Peter has had the opportunity to study with renowned musicians such as Mick Goodrick, Gilad Hekselman, Joanne Brackeen, Dave Santoro, Bret Willmott, and Steve Herberman. Currently, he is deeply immersed in his work at Berklee College of Music, studying to achieve his career goal: to work as a professional jazz performer, arranger, and composer.
