About Me

Micah Deterville is a trumpet player originally from Woodland HIlls CA. He started playing classical music in middle school and quickly became interested in jazz. While in high school, he enrolled in both wind ensemble, marching band and jazz band and competed to be in the top ensemble in each of those bands. Within a year he was placed in the top wind ensemble and top jazz band and got to participate in all the school band activities. For wind ensemble he traveled to Chicago and Boston for the Heritage Festival of Gold. While in Boston he got to perform in Boston Symphony Hall playing the Unfisihed Symphony and Tchaikovsky’s 4th symphony. With the Jazz band he competed in the Reno Jazz Festival, a volunteering event in New Orleans (post-Katrina construction and revitalizing the jazz culture) and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington 2009 festival. At this event Micah was chosen to rehearse with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Wynton Marsalis. He also was presednted with the Honorable Mention Trumpet Solo award as well as his section receiving the Outstanding Brass Section award. To end his high school career, Micah recieved a music booster’s scholarship as well as the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award.

After high school Micah continued his education at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. There he has been on the dean’s list every semester and tested out of a lot of core classes. He recieved a notable scholarship to attend the school in Boston MA. There he has recorded for many fellow Berklee studnets. He also played with school ensembles like the Berklee Pfunk Ensemble at David Friend Recital Hall and Hynes Convention Center for the HIgh School Jazz Festival. He was also honored to play with the Pfunk All-Stars at the Beantown Jazz Festival 2011 with special guest Bernie Warrol, original Pfunk member. Micah Deterville also competed in the Al Natale Brass Scholarship recital and was chosen as a finalist to play in the recital at David Friend. The quintet that he formed for this recital also became an active ensemble that has played caf shows, recitals and is a regular fixture at Berklee’s LGBT caf show Queerstock.
