Hinako Sato was born and raised in Tsuruoka, a city located in the Tohoku region, Japan.
Her father being a musician as well as a concert venue and a recording studio owner, she found her love and passion towards music as early as five (5) years old.
She started playing the drums at the age seven (7), and formed her first band with her friends from school the same year. At the age eight (8) she started playing Fender Rhodes, and soon joined her father’s band. This was the beginning of her performance career. She started playing the Piano at 8 and started to play for many choir groups at her school. At the same time she also picked up Trumpet and started playing it in a marching band at school.
She had her first solo Piano concert at the age eleven (11), and the same year she participated in a Piano Competition. She won the 1st prize in Tohoku region (Northern half of the nation) and the 3rd in the nation. She had a lot of media exposure because of this award and for her age. She had two more solo concerts in the following two years. In the meantime, she studied classical percussion for 3 years playing in an orchestra at school.
During the junior year in her High School, she studied abroad in US for a year in participation of the cultural exchange program. While in US, she studied classical Piano and won a superior award at the Florida district Piano competition. She also played for various choir groups at her school and attended many competitions/performances with them.
After returning to Japan, she formed her own group as a guitar and piano/vocal duo and started performing regularly. Her band sometimes expanded to a big band depending on occasions. She was performing in hotels/restaurants/bars/clubs for all types of events in her city and beyond. She also directed a Gospel-choir and played Piano for them for a year and a half. She also performed with Swing Cranes Jazz Orchestra as a vocalist, sometimes as a Pianist. She was involved in just about every musical event in her city.
In 2004, she auditioned and was awarded with Scholarships to come and study at Berklee College of Music in Boston. The following year in fall, she started her Piano performance study here at Berklee.
Since then, she has been actively involved with many musicians from around the world. In 2006, she auditioned and joined the band called Zili Misik, and started actively working with them as a Keyboardist/Vocalist. The band had won
numerous recognizable awards until she left in May 2009, and has been one of the most active Berklee-affiliated bands in New England area.
In March 2010, she joined another Boston-based international music group called Women of the World, and she has been taking active role as a keyboardist as well as a project manager, event coordinator, and promoter for the group. Since her joining, the group has performed with artists such as Angelique Kidjo, has been recognized by Bobby McFerrin, and has made their debut at the Carnegie Hall in NY, on March 2011.
She is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Music Business and Management at Berklee, with concentration in the Entrepreneur track.
