ChoYoung Ahn was born in August 9th, 1989 and raised in Bucheon, South Korea.
She started her music career when she was 5 years old. She performed in Korean traditional musical called ‘Heung-Bu and Nol-Bu’, and was also a member of choir at her school and church. She took piano lessons from 1997 to 2002 and had some concerts at local concert halls. Since then, she started to have interests in music including composing, singing, playing, and so on.
In 2007, ChoYoung decided to learn singing professionally, so she attended some institutions for vocal training. She was a member of hip-hop crew in Korea as a female singer. Usually the performances took place at number of schools. Also, with her band, she won number of awards from various local music contests. After the graduation from high school, she concentrated on improving her vocal ability and getting opportunities in broader musical field. She started singing demos for various artists’ recording as a guide vocalist, and had many gigs around Hong-ik University area, which is well known for Indi music in Korea. At that time, she had a chance to have a concert with Gummy, Soul Star, IU who are famous Korean singers. In 2010, she started to perform regularly with her band ‘SoulClef’ which was a R&B band. She got to have many great experiences with her band; releasing album, Indi band performance, lots of gigs, and public activities for hip-hop brand MF, etc.
In 2011, before she left Korea, she participated in a composition contest with her friend. The team name was ‘Roahn’ and they won a prize and released collaboration album. They had some performances including Myeong-Dong church, which is one of the Catholic churches in Korea, and appearance on radio shows and TV.
ChoYoung also worked as a backing singer. She had concerts and music festivals with famous Korean musicians such as DoHyang Kim, Yoonju Jang, JK DongWook Kim, and Alex.
ChoYoung had a private instructor Sunny Kim who is a rising jazz artist in Korea. ChoYoung learned many things from her, and because of her influences of jazz, ChoYoung decided to go to USA to study Jazz. She applied for Berklee College of Music and accepted as a proud recipient of Berklee Asia Scholarship Tour. Since 2012, Choyoung is studying at Berkee College of Music.
After she got into Berklee, she had many great experiences including recording sessions, recitals, concerts with great musicians like Marcos Valle, Patrice Ruchen, and so on. She is still having great time and experiences at Berklee. She is very thankful to Berklee offers students to learn and get wide opportunities.
