About Me

José Daniel Ortega is a well-known producer from Costa Rica, he has worked with almost every reggae and hip hop local artist and many international artists too, amongst all the names, we can highlight Luciano, Mickey General, Fidel Nadal, Pablito Molina, Johnny Dread, Cafú Banton, Shel, Toledo, Tapón and many more. He also has shared stage with Capleton, Alborosie, Black Uhuru, Don Carlos, Fantan Mojah, Jah Mason, Jah Thunder, Mad Cobra, Los Cafres and El Rookie to name a few.

As a child he showed interest in music so his mother enrolled him in the Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica (program for children). At age 15 he
started playing drums, formed a reggae-ska band with his classmates, and quickly got the interest of older and more established musicians. He joined a couple of projects which are recognized as the firsts reggae
backing bands from Costa Rica, Maitam and Pushin’. In 2003 he started producing with his friend and bandmate Randall Castro, who own R9 studio and in 2008 they decided to get back to the road and form R9
Backing Band to support all the artists. He was in Switzerland for 6 months where he made great contacts and learned from his mentor and friend Asher Selector/Roots Man Productions. Now he is back in Costa Rica producing and studying music production and technology at Berklee College of Music’s online program.
